NO NEW JAILS, We Keep Us Safe ELECTORAL PLEDGE!

The jail building era is OVER. This is a national call to any elected official or person running for office, including Presidential candidates. We will no longer accept jails being built in our communities nor suffer the careers of those who support the building of new jails.

PLEASE NOTE THAT NNJ DOES NOT ENDORSE CANDIDATES.

New York City’s $11,000,000,000 for More Jails

In over 50+ cities, local elected officials are building jails to lock up our futures: committing our neighbors and children to  cages. After the death of Kalief Browder, the Campaign to Shut Down Rikers and other grassroots efforts across New York City fought to close Rikers Island. Instead of implementing community demands, Mayor De Blasio created a jail expansion plan that allots  $11,000,000,000 to build four new jails while keeping Rikers open indefinitely.

On October 17th, New York City Council will vote on building four new boutique style, skyscraper jails in New York City. Mayor Bill de Blasio is trying to sell us a false choice: new borough jails or Rikers Island jails won't close. We know that these jails will be the largest multi-use jails in the world. We know there is no binding commitment to closing Rikers in the mayor’s jail plan. We know that our community can close Rikers before 2026 without building new jails.

Our Commitment

The jail building era is over. We are calling upon elected representatives and candidates seeking public office to stand firmly against jail building and support to closure of cages. This is a commitment rooted in solidarity with Black and brown communities directly impacted by mass incarceration: poor people, gender non conforming and LGBTQIA communities who are criminalized, Muslim communities that are surveilled, and immigrant communities that are facing the brunt of Trump’s violent deportation policies. If you are currently in office or planning to run, signing this pledge will show us that you are committed to ending the era of jail building.

Join the movement to empower our communities to lead this country in its first steps away from incarceration.

Organizations: Sign the #NoNewJailsPLEDGE and commit to holding elected officials and candidates accountable for their decision to vote for the construction of more jails  in 2020 and beyond.

Candidates: Sign the #NoNewJailsLPLEDGE: show us you serve your people, not private interests and profiteers.

Hello Members,

Human beings do not belong in cages. In fact jails do not create safety, they only damage souls leaving broken families, neighborhoods and people in their wake. After decades of incarceration we are still a nation filled with violence, with fear driving every policy of punishment that is pouring billions of local, state, and federal taxpayer dollars into ever-expanding carceral systems.

In our electoral work, we will not take money from any formal organizations in the punishment system. For instance, if the candidate asking for endorsement is also endorsed by law enforcement unions or private prisons, we will not endorse them. We will commit to pushing a jail moratorium, and demand any candidate we support must fight the construction of any jails. We will oppose every jail proposal and instead advocate for public money resources to be put into the needs of our communities, especially those targeted by decades of incarceration.

I commit to No New Jails.
