New Bronx jail is a balancing act | Daily News
The Daily News’ July 8 editorial “ 'Closing’ of the progressive mind” correctly identified the moral imperative driving the city’s plan to close the jails on Rikers Island in favor of four borough-based smaller, safer, fairer facilities, which we now believe we can do by 2026 — one year earlier than originally planned.
The location for the new facility in Mott Haven in the Bronx was selected after extensive deliberation. We’ve received substantial input from residents, community-based organizations and elected officials; we have and will continue to incorporate their views into our proposals. Some critics have suggested that a different site, with a smaller, zig-zagging footprint behind the Bronx Hall of Justice would make a better location. Continue reading.
